Visa mobile payments

Near-field communication technology enables two electronic devices to establish communication by bringing them within a few centimetres of each other. New Zealanders are now able to make Visa contactless payments using smartphones enabled with near-field communication technology– by tapping their phone in front of a Visa contactless terminal.

Who wants to take a wallet running? A wearable device lets you conveniently buy a coffee or a cool drink at the end of your run with just a tap. Many waterproof wearables have been designed especially for active use and come with Visa tap to pay technology that can be linked to any existing account. There is a growing list of devices available to you such as Fitbit Ionic, Apple Watch, Garmin vivoactive 3, and Optus pay bands (only available to Optus customers). But the number of wearables is set to explode. Wearables are expected to count for up to 20% of all proximity payments by 2020. Preparing for the shift, Visa has made a number of new capabilities available over the past couple of years, empowering our partners to offer safe, secure and convenient ways to pay across a range of devices. Gone are the days of worrying about your wallet on the beach as you have a swim, or shoving cash in your sock as you go for a run. You want ways to pay that suit your lifestyle. That’s the future we’re working on.

Connected Car

Let your car pick up the tab. Just as new technology is going to change the way we drive cars, new innovations from Visa are going to change the way you pay when you’re in your car. Honda is currently testing two new apps that use Visa’s technology. The first is a parking app that ensures you only pay for the time you use a space. Before you drive away, the car’s dashboard shows the amount due – you simply press a button to conveniently pay. The second is a petrol app. When you’re low on gas the app will direct you to a nearby petrol station and know the exact amount of petrol you need. You pay on the car’s dashboard, so you don’t have to worry about going into the shop. Both apps use Visa’s Token Service, an innovative security technology that removes sensitive account details and replaces them with a token for improved safety. You want new convenient ways of paying. That’s the future we’re working on.

Future of Transportation

The future success of our cities is intertwined with, and reliant on, the future of transportation. To assess trends in public transportation and identify ways to improve daily travel, creating smarter and more efficient cities, Visa and Stanford University conducted one of the largest global transportation studies. The Future of Transportation: Mobility in the Age of the Megacity incorporates insights from more than 19,000 commuters in 19 countries. The key findings are combined with a view of existing and near horizon innovations provided by experts at Stanford University, to better understand the technology gaps in addressing pain points.
